MANILA, Philippines - (UPDATE - 1:18 p.m.) A security video uploaded on YouTube captures a scene that has netizens denouncing Makati City Mayor Junjun lotus malaysia Binay. A standoff ensues for more than 20 minutes. The mayor's armed guards surround the village guards. Mayor Binay is seen making phone calls. Eventually, Makati police arrive, lift the barrier, and leave with the security guards.
The Philippine Daily Inquirer, which first obtained the security video and uploaded a copy on YouTube, quotes unidentified sources as saying the guards were held for four hours at a Makati Police station.
" The Inquirer relied too heavily on a source who was conveniently not identified," Salgado said in a text message to InterAksyon.com. "Obviously the source gave false and malicious information to the PDI."
The Binay spokesman stressed that "nowhere in the 20 min video did you see the convoy forcing its way through the gate. In fact, the convoy waited for police to arrive. The mayor never uttered the words ' Kilala mo ba ako ' as claimed by PDI's unnamed source."
According to Salgado, "on the contrary, the mayor went down his vehicle and said, 'Si Mayor Binay ako. Baka pwedeng makiraan lang.' He said this after the guard refused to believe a staff who said the mayor was inside the vehicle."
In any case, the spokesman added, "We consider the matter closed. (The security agency) has apologized for lapses in providing security assistance to the mayor, a courtesy extended to all visiting lotus malaysia VIPs."
